On Tuesday, 15 March 2016, Indmira was visited by Pedak Baru Women’s Group from Bantul, Yogyakarta. The group, which consisted mainly by housewives, was also accompanied by other village elders.
The activities started at 09:00 when the participants were shown to the front displays. Here, they learned about Indmira’s technologies on marginal land farming. There were plots for rice planting on beach sandy soil, former mining soil, and rice husk, as well as shallot cultivation on peat, that sparked the interest of our visitors.
The next stop was the hydroponic and aquaponic area where Mr. Budi Haryono S.Si., a staff member of the R & D Division, was ready to explain those systems. In addition to the constructions, Indmira has been developing hydroponic nutrients for own production as well as others. Aquaponic was the next system to be explained that gained lots of curiousity and interest from the guests mainly because of its multiple function. Developed with the help from student interns from ITB (Institut Teknologi Bandung – Bandung Institute of Technology), aquaponic combines fish farming and vegetable growing. The fish provide nutrients for the plants, the plants with the medium filter the water for the fish, a win-win combination.
The guests were shown to one of the first technologies that were developed at Indmira, verticulture – growing plants vertically to optimize nutrients and space utilization. Currently the crops that are grown in the manner are vanilla and black-pepper. These commodities are very valuable yet difficult to cultivate. However, we have been able to show that verticulture can used to overcome this challenge.
At the end of the visit, the visitors were introduced to the products of our research team such as organic fertilizers, livestock nutritions, soil ameliorants, and other farming necessities. Mr. Tri Wibowo, SP., led the session which generated lots of interesting and educational questions from the participants about our products.
As a research-based company in the fields of agriculture, environment, and renewable energy, Indmira is very open to sharing our knowledge through visits and workshops.
