Indmira and KKN¹ UGM² Teams Learning Biogas from A Dairyman
June 12, 2017 - News
Another applicable technology offered by Indmira to KKN UGM teams in 2017 was biogas production. A workshop took place in April at a dairy farm co-op in Balongan village, Sleman, Yogyakarta. Mr. Santoso led the workshop.
He himself graduated from the Faculty of Pharmacy, UGM, but turned to a dairyman in 2009. After going through several profesions, Mr. Santoso finally decided to raised Friesian Holstein dairy cattle. He and his neighbours slowly build a dairyman co-op called “Ngudi Makmur Ngeremboko”, which means “Striving for Prosperity Together”.
Mr. Santoso utilizes the manure from his animals to produce biogas. Initially his neighbours were skeptical of his efforts. But once he found the best method for his system, everyone cannot argue with hid success. Mr. Santoso has not had to buy gas for his family’s cooking needs since 2013.
He explained that the best place to put the digester was underground to maintain stable temperature for optimal biogas digestion. He also added that it’s better to dilute the manure with water to have a better flow and reduce clogging in the system.
This was the first biogas workshop in the collaboration between Indmira and KKN UGM teams. The students were headed to Nusa Tenggara Barat in June 2017.
